Sankardeva preached a simple and pure form of devotion known as Eka Sarana Nama Dharma (Shelter in One God).
He emphasized:
Devotion to Lord Krishna
Chanting of God’s name (Naam)

Literary and Cultural Contributions

He composed many soulful devotional songs called Borgeet, which are still sung in naamghars and satras.
2. Ankiya Naat (Religious Drama)
He introduced one-act plays known as Ankiya Naat, performed in a unique theatrical style.
3. Sattriya Dance
The classical dance form of Assam, Sattriya, originated from his cultural movement. Today, Sattriya is recognized as one of India’s classical dance forms.
4. Translation of Scriptures
He translated parts of the Bhagavata Purana into Assamese, making religious knowledge accessible to common people.
Social Reformer and Nation Builder
Srimanta Sankardev worked for social equality. During a time when caste discrimination was strong, he opened the doors of devotion to everyone — regardless of caste or background.
He established Satras (monastic institutions) and Naamghars (prayer halls), which became centers of spiritual learning and community unity. These institutions still play a vital role in Assamese society.
